Dear Friend,
Happy Spring!
The synergy we are experiencing up and down the corridor
is a result of the wonderful relationships we are developing along
the way! As we continue to work in our Phase Four
outreach process, part of our work is to "stay
connected" throughout the phases while identifying new
partnerships and making new connections. How do we do this?
By the amazing people who are informed and engaged with our
project! We truly appreciate your contribution, influence and
enthusiasm! Thanks for reading our newsletter, sharing the happenings
we post on our website, and thanks for forwarding this newsletter
to others. Thanks for all you contribute to our city!
Our official Phase Four launch is April 7, at the
Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC), 425 Atlantic Avenue from 5:00 to
7:00 pm. The location couldn't be more perfect because part of the
outreach efforts started there. I remember within the first week
(October 2007) of my new position as the Project Director
for the Leadership Long Beach Atlantic Corridor project, the
Connected Corridor, I met Margaret Madden. At the time I wanted
to better understand the various neighborhoods of our first phase,
North Long Beach. Jerry Miller, former City Manager, recommended I
speak to Madden. She took the time to share resources available through
NRC, she spent time discussing our communication needs for the project,
and our vision. Wow!
In the last three years I
learned you can always count on Margaret Madden to support our city's
neighborhoods. Her focus is always on the people. She loves our city
and she loves empowering others! On behalf of the Connected Corridor
team, we are truly appreciative for all that she does
including the amazing team of professionals at the Neighborhood
Resource Center: Scottie, James,
Francisco, Dinah, Martha, and Lydia. Recently we
uploaded their copy of "The List" to our website's
homepage. This document is a list of all
the neighborhood associations and organizations. What a
valuable resource to have available as a resident of Long
Beach. It's free too!
Special
Announcement: Mayor Bob Foster will be joining our Meet and Greet
Event! Phase Four Meet and Greet Launch will take place at the
Neighborhood Resource Center, 425 Atlantic Avenue on April
7 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The program starts promptly at 5:30
pm. Please R.S.V.P. to (562) 760-8957 or carinacrs@yahoo.com.
Due to the incredible response we only have several spaces
left. Phase Four - Pacific Coast Hwy to Ocean Blvd, along the
Atlantic Corridor.
Many thanks,
Carina Cristiano Leoni

Car-Free
Friday
April 2, Friday

This Friday the community
is invited to participate in Car-Free Fridays and Lunch Breaks for
Cyclists. Car-Free Fridays were launched last summer to encourage
community members to use alternative modes of transportation the first
Friday of every month to promote a more active, green Long Beach. The
campaign is aimed to get more people to leave their cars at home and
start realizing the global and personal benefits of riding a bicycle or
using another form of alternate transportation. Choosing to commute by
bicycle, even on occasion, can have immediate positive health and
environmental results.
An added benefit of biking to work on a designated Car-Free Friday is
taking advantage of "lunch break" discounts for cyclists,
which are offered at more than 20 eateries in Long Beach between the
hours of 11 am and 2 pm. Cyclists need only mention the promotion and
show proof of ridership in the form of their helmet or bicycle lock key
to take advantage of the discounts.
For an updated list of participating Long Beach restaurants, please
visit www.bikelongbeach.org.
Interested in having your restaurant participate? Contact
Courtney Aguirre, Transportation Programs Planner, at courtney.aguirre@longbeach.gov or 562.570.6667.

Wrigley Garden News

Wrigley
Garden News: With its Connected Corridor grant funds, the Wrigley
Garden bought a greenhouse and quickly started growing edibles. Right
now the greenhouse is full of warm-season vegetables like tomatoes
and eggplant that will be used by the gardeners and sold at
fundraisers. In addition, Wrigley Garden Director Sasha Kanno is
volunteering at Birney Elementary School, sharing the fun of growing
your own food with the 4th and 5th grade students.

Special thanks to Les Peters and Bob Cabeza from the YMCA
of Greater Long Beach, Downtown Community Development Branch and the
California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) for including the
Connected Corridor at their fair on March 20 at Stevenson Elementary
School.
The Get Connected! program was a community outreach fair
with hands-on interactive events that demonstrated the benefits
of using broadband. Burnett Library and Library
Foundation joined our Connected Corridor presence. They had
their laptops set up to demonstrate Learning Express as well as share
super resources available for the whole family in afterschool
homework help at Burnett Library!
One significant learning during this day happened when we realized
parents had library cards for their children, but not for themselves.
Many parents did not realize they had access to the library or the
library services along with their children. This included the lack of
knowledge that parents had access to computers. Imagine this hiccup
of information for our community members. Parents thinking the library
was only for youth! The Library Foundation immediately jumped into
action and have since developed further communication outreach to get
this information across to the parent community. It is hard to
believe that something we might take for granted as a given was
simply not known in our general public. We cannot express our
thanks nearly enough to the library service
team. Their contribution was amazing!
Special thanks also goes to our other Connected
Corridor participants: Long Beach Shakespeare, Red Eye Media, Un
Mundo de Amigos Preschool, Dramatic Results, 562CityLife, and Kingdom
Causes. Each group showed up in full force and with great
enthusiasm for creating connectivity and developing collaborations
among groups.
